Trust in God
Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me. John 14:1 I can think of many reasons why my heart could be troubled. We live in difficult and evil times. There are financial concerns, health and family issues, work related problems that demand a solution, and the list could go on. Most of these problems are not under our control. Anxiety is a normal human response to these troubling situations because we feel incapable of putting things right where they have gone wrong. However we are given an important choice, either to worry or to trust God. Over and over again in Scripture we are told to put our trust in God. Peter tells the believers: Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you (1 Peter 5:7). Being cared for by an almighty God is good news for a troubled heart. Why do we find it so difficult to trust in God in times of trials and adverse circumstances? If I look at myself, my own capabilities and possibilities, strengths and weaknesses, often a good solution is a remote possibility at best, but even more often unthinkable. The result is loosing hope and the onset of despair. However, if I think about who God is and how he has demonstrated his power in creating the universe and shown his love to us in the Lord Jesus Christ, and if I remember his invitation to trust in him, I must come to the logical conclusion that it is foolish not to trust in him. This is not just to be comforted but to receive help from an almighty God. To trust in God is the wisest counsel one can give to any human being. We make our biggest mistake in any situation by not trusting God. Jeremiah knows about this better than I do. In Jeremiah 17:5–8, he paints a contrasting picture of someone who trusts in human strength and a man who trusts in the Lord. The outcome is totally different. Let me repeat here what he writes about a man or a woman who is trusting in the Lord: But blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in him. He will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit. You can check for yourself what Jeremiah has to say about a man who trusts in human recourses and then make an intelligent choice about the two options.
